How to Measure Battery Voltage

Overview

In this article you will learn how to measure the voltage on your battery. A low battery voltage can cause issues with the gate's operation. Good voltage on a battery doesn't always mean the battery is good. If the battery in your gate opener is questionable, it's always a good idea to have the battery load tested at a battery store.

What You Need

  1. Digital Multi-meter capable of reading DC voltage. The fuses in the meter must be good.

Procedure

Disconnect Battery

You can either disconnect the battery controller from the battery posts itself or disconnect the red/black wires from the bottom of the battery controller.

Set Multi-Meter to DC Voltage

Use a range of 20 if your meter does not auto range.

Measure Battery Voltage

  1. Put the red lead of the meter on the positive post of the battery.
  2. Put the black lead of the meter on the negative post of the battery.
  3. The meter will display your battery voltage.
